NORTON SHORES, MI - A Muskegon-area company expanded its footprint - again - this month when it acquired a janitorial business.

Nichols, founded in Muskegon in 1936, closed on the purchase of Spectrum Janitorial on Tuesday, Nov. 7. It's the latest of numerous acquisitions completed by the company over its 81-year history.

"Spectrum is a natural fit with Nichols current product and service offering," according to a news release. "The acquisition further reinforces the Nichols position as the leading provider of solutions for clean and healthy facilities and the safe shipment of products in the Great Lakes region."

This acquisition will expose Nichols to new markets in Indianapolis and Decatur, Ill. It is part of a "strategic plan for continued growth and expansion," according to the release.

Nichols provides cleaning and health products including cleaning supplies, floor care equipment, food service supplies, hand cleaning systems, laundry, packaging machines, packaging and production supplies, paper products, restroom systems, and safety and shipping supplies to industrial, education, building service contractors, healthcare and lodging industries.

Spectrum Janitorial has been in business since 1989 as a family-owned and -operated facility solutions company. Their mission is to "provide customers with the most innovative and proven cleaning supplies, equipment and service in the industry," according to the release.

"We are excited to build on the strong relationships Spectrum has developed in Indiana and Illinois, and to expand our team with the experienced and knowledgeable associates from these branches," said Nichols CEO Mike Olthoff, in a statement.

Other recent acquisitions include Professional Sanitary Supply, a janitorial and industrial supply distributor based in Waterford Township near Detroit during 2015. Nichols acquired Kellermeyer of Bowling Green, Ohio, in 2014, and ICS of Waterford in 2013.

The sanitary supply businesses of Great Lakes Air Gas (2004), Van Wood Chemical of Grand Rapids (1992) and Marvin Albers Co. of Holland (1988) have also been acquired in the last 28 years.

Headquartered at 1391 Judson Road in Norton Shores, Nichols has branches in Grand Rapids, Detroit, Holland, Traverse City, Cleveland and Bowling Green, Ohio.
