Sappi Fine Paper is investing more than $3.8 million in its Muskegon paper plant at 2400 Lakeshore, for which it has been awarded a seven-year tax break.

Under the state's Public Act 198, which addresses tax abatements, Sappi will save $316,916 in each of the seven years on the new equipment it is purchasing for its papermaking operations.

The investment still will generate $211,619 to the city annually and $633,833 for all local taxing jurisdictions.

However, the new investment is not expected to increase the plant's current employment level, which stands at 212.
